Oulu Pride

August 2–8, 2021

All the colors of the rainbow will shine on the Bright City of the North, when Oulu Pride celebrates diversity, equality, and inclusion! Join our community in making an unforgettable event! This year’s theme is LGBTQIA+ people in work-life.

Please be aware that English version of the page includes only main Pride events and activities that are available at least partly in English.

The safety of our guests and volunteers is very important to us, so we monitor the pandemic situation related to Covid-19 and we do act accordingly by following all recommendations shared by local authorities.

If the Pandemic restrictions will be raised in the region before the Oulu Pride Week, we will try to stream events online.

6:00 PM – 7:30 PM

Shorinji Kempo by Camden Kempo

Come and learn Shorinji Kempo! Your English or Japanese doesn’t need to be fluent, we will teach you everything you need.

This martial art teaches practical self-defence, fitness training and meditation practices.

Kavita Kapoor – founder of the worlds first LGBTQ+ Kempo club – will take you through a series of ‘hard’ strikes (punches or kicks) and ‘soft’ grappling techniques. As part of training, we also practice shouting (ki’ ai) at an attacker to teach you how to find your voice in any situation.

Due to the very serious threats of violence faced by people in the LGBTQ+ community, our training, discussions and techniques are suitable for those over 18’s or those over 12 accompanied by an adult.

We also teach restorative techniques: massage (seiho), seated meditation (zazen) and socialising (hanging out in the pub) – all to help with mindfulness. In respect to the British pub culture, we will continue to optional hanging out to the 1bar after the training.

All Shorinji Kempo classes centre on respect and cooperation, it’s never a competition! Give it a go this pride week.

Location: Cultural Center Valve, 3rd floor – dance hall 1, Hallituskatu 7, 90100 Oulu.

About Us – Portraits of BIpoc LGBTIQ+ people living in Finland by Aleksandra Lemke.

It has been 50 years since the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Finland and a considerably progress has been made ever since to safeguard and promote LGBTIQ rights in Finland. Despite the important milestones, a lot of work is still required to fully advance the rights of all people within LGBTIQ communities.

About Us is a photo exhibition that aims to empower and increase the representation of LGBTIQ people of colour in Finland. It also challenges the dominant discourse of whiteness in LGBTIQ communities and addresses multiple forms of discrimination in the Finnish society that is not yet fully understood. The exhibition puts limelight on the stories that are part of Finland.

Website: seta.fi/meista
The exhibition is available digitally on the screens in 1bar.

Location: 1Bar, Kauppurienkatu 5, 90100 Oulu.
